Once you learn how to make a perfect matcha latte at home, even the best coffee shop matchas won’t compare. The technique is actually pretty simple, but a high-quality Japanese matcha, a bamboo whisk, and a few easy steps can make all the difference.

1 cup milk

1. Start by soaking your bamboo whisk in warm water to soften the bristles.
2. Add 1 tsp Japanese matcha into a mesh sifter fitted over a bowl. Sift the matcha into the bowl to remove any clumps.
3. Add about 1/4-1/3 cup of hot (not boiling) water and whisk in an “M” or “W” motion.
4. Froth a cup of your favorite milk — I use an unsweetened vanilla almond milk.
5. To a mug, add your sweetener of choice. I use a tiny bit of pure maple syrup. Then pour in the warm, frothed milk.
6. Add the whisked matcha. I like to top it with one more sprinkle of matcha on top from the sifter or a sprinkle of cinnamon. Enjoy!
